Not Sure What Type of Roofing Material to Choose?

Will a Professional Roofing Contractor Know What Is the Best Roofing Material for Your Home?

The possibilities are limitless when it comes down to roofing materials. Ranging from concrete, shingles, slate, clay, rubber or metals, each kind of material comes with its own advantages and disadvantages. Homeowners will have to consider their location, climate and appearance, in addition to maintenance and the installation prices, before choosing any roofing material.

Most house roofs within the U.S. are asphalt shingles. These materials come in various colors, and have a lifespan of approximately 30 years. Another kind which is similar but thicker is dimensional shingles. These have a longer lifespan of 40 years. They are easy to install and the cheapest choice for residential houses. But, moss build-up and sufficient venting are two of the disadvantages with shingles. Some of the more modern homes have changed to cedar shakes because they look more traditional; however, they are more environmentally friendly and come with a lifespan of 30 years.

Because metal roofing is made up from copper, steel or aluminium, these materials are better suited in several different regions. More so in places prone to rainy weather. Metal also reflects heat and is able to withstand severe wind, rain and snow, so the metal will not suffer with moss building up like shingles do. Even though metal is more expensive than asphalt, it is still more cost effective than some roofing materials. Plus, they have a life expectancy of 50 years.

Clay or concrete tiles are usually seen within warmer climates or on houses that have a distinct Spanish theme. These materials can be used nearly anywhere. Clay is an extremely resilient material and is able to withstand harsh weather. Another bonus is they have a lifespan of 50 years. However, ask any professional roofing contractor, and they will tell you that these roofing materials are very expensive and extremely heavy, and would not be suitable for certain homes.
